Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is usually detected during the course of a routine exam. A doctor might notice an abnormality that shows up on x-rays, or suspect the disease has developed based on the patient’s symptoms (e.g. persistent cough, difficulty breathing, etc.). In nearly one in four cases, the disorder is entirely absent of symptoms, making its detection less likely.

Treatment for lung cancer is largely dependent on the location and size of the tumor (the patient’s ability to tolerate surgery is also a factor). If the disease is limited to a single lobe of the lung, a lobectomy can be performed. This is a procedure during which the affected lobe is surgically removed.

In this article, we’ll briefly present the tests used to determine staging for the disorder. We’ll also describe how video-assisted thorascopic surgery (VATS) is performed to remove the diseased lobe.

Tests To Determine Staging For Lung Cancer

Several studies are performed to diagnose lung cancer, and identify the extent of metastasis (the disease’s spread from its initial location). Following a physical examination, chest x-rays are taken. The images can display abnormal masses that might indicate tumors. Since X-rays are often normal, additional tests are usually necessary.

A CT scan can be used to generate 3-dimensional images of the lungs. While these images are rarely conclusive, they may reveal masses that warrant retrieval of a tissue sample. A PET scan serves the same purpose, but is particularly helpful in displaying tumors that are growing. If the doctor suspects NSCLC has metastasized to other areas of the body (e.g. liver, brain, etc.), CT scans are taken of these areas, as well.

Tissue samples can be retrieved via a bronchoscopy or needle biopsy. The former is performed when cancer cells are detected in the air passages. The latter is done when a tumor is detected in an area that lies beyond the reach of a bronchoscopy.

How VATS Lobectomy Is Performed

Traditionally, a lobectomy has been performed through thoracotomy. A single long incision is made into the patient’s chest. Several major muscles are cut, and the ribs are spread apart to provide the surgeon access to the diseased lobe. This approach is still practiced today when less-invasive measures are not possible.

A VATS lobectomy is an alternative approach that does not require cutting through major muscles. Nor does it require spreading the ribs. Instead, three or four smaller incisions are made, and the surgeon works through the ribs.

Several instruments, including a thoracoscope (small video camera), are inserted through the incisions. The thoracoscope sends a video feed to a monitor watched by the surgeon. The images provide the surgeon with visualization, so the diseased lobe can be cut away from the lung, and removed through one of the incisions. The rest of the chest cavity is checked for bleeding before the incisions are closed.

Advantages Of VATS Lobectomy Over Conventional Thoracic Surgery

Because VATS lobectomy is less invasive than thoracotomy, the patient experiences less pain following the procedure. There’s also less likelihood of infection and other complications. Less trauma to the chest wall also means the time spent in the hospital is reduced to a few days. At-home recovery time is likewise significantly shortened.

How Candidates Are Selected For The Procedure

Despite the benefits of video-assisted lobectomy, not all patients are considered suitable candidates for the procedure. Certain criteria must be met for the operation to be successful. The tumor must be localized to a single lobe, and have a diameter measuring no more than 3 centimeters. Ideally, it should also be located away from air passages and lymph nodes. If the tumor does not meet these requirements, the pulmonologist may suggest a traditional approach.

VATS lobectomy has become an increasingly popular alternative to thoracotomy. When performed by an experienced surgeon, the procedure is successful in removing cancer cells with a minimal chance of recurrence.

I’ve run into women with breast cancer who have no idea what type of cancer they have. This concerned me because after a while, I started noticing a pattern amongst the women who knew what they had, and those who didn’t.

Now, before I go any further, please understand that I’m not saying you HAVE to deal with cancer in a certain way. But, what I noticed was that the women who took a proactive, “I’m going to beat this” approach knew what kind of cancer they had. Those who were terrified (and rightly so) didn’t know the type. (I also saw an age difference. Older breast cancer patients usually didn’ know, but that’s a generational issue usually.) I’m talking about younger women with breast cancer.

When young women couldn’t tell me what type of cancer they had, there was usually an accompanying sense of defeat – a sense of palpable fear that it was just a matter of time. (Again, fear is totally understandable – a lack of fear would be worrisome.)

Fear and cancer is not a combination that helps with healing.

However, knowledge is power, and understanding can allay fears. Otherwise, our imaginations have a tendency to run wild with all kinds of dire possibilities.

When you can name something, you can know it better. When you name something, you have power over it. (This may sound odd to add here – but when Jesus cast out demons, he always asked their name first. Why? There’s power in knowing a name.)

That’s why I’d encourage all women with breast cancer (or anyone with any cancer) to know the name for what you have. Then you can know what it’s like and how it works – and most importantly, you can know how to defeat it. (And maybe even MORE importantly, you can be on the lookout for remedies and solutions that your doctor may not suggest – like meditation or reflexology or essential oils, and it goes without saying that you should ALWAYS run alternative therapies by your healthcare team.)

Knowing exactly what you have puts YOU in the driver’s seat, and gives you more power to make informed decisions.

If for no other reason, knowing the name of the cancer will allow you to get a specific image of it in your mind. This alone will get rid of a lot of confusion, and since confusion leads directly to fear, this will help you beat the disease.

“You gain strength, courage and confidence by every experience in which you stop to look fear in the face.” ~ Eleanor Roosevelt

Five years ago I knew breast cancer only in the abstract. It hadn’t touched my life yet. I wondered how it was that so many women and a few men became hosts to a disease which started eating them up and, left untreated, could kill them. Had it always been this way? If not what has changed? I knew some cancer survivors and heard tales of a woman who died of breast cancer before I had a chance to meet her.

Then my beloved companion joined her mother and two sisters in the family struggle with breast cancer. The discovery immediately took over our relationship, first inviting panic and then survival strategies. Would she recover as did her older sister? Would she succumb to the disease as did her mother and younger sister? What was her prognosis? What should she do? What could I do?

Now, five years later, she has reached an important milestone in her recovery and survival. Each step in her treatment raised questions, challenges and fears. Eventually we tamed our concerns and made the necessary decisions. She endured treatment while I provided what support I could. Our life was different but we survived the ordeal and drew closer together in the process.

Recently I sat in a room full of several hundred breast cancer survivors, some of a few months and some of many years. They came together to raise money for breast cancer treatment and research. They dined and participated in a Chinese auction of gift baskets and a silent auction of bras elaborately decorated by craftswomen whose creations had been exhibited in a celebration of breast cancer awareness. Mostly they celebrated their courage and solidarity.

I wondered again about why people contract breast or any other sort of cancer. Mutated genes have been discovered to make breast cancer more likely. Clusters of cancer sufferers suggest environmental factors. Most likely is a combination of hereditary and environmental contributors.

Fortunately, research advances now make cancer a much less likely death sentence. Genetic testing helps make us aware of our risks. Research promises new, less primitive, treatments more in the near future. We also know more about how lifestyle such as nutrition, fitness and avoiding carcinogens can help keep us from cancer’s grasp.

In these days when we are divided politically, culturally and religiously, it is reassuring to know that we can come together to fight cancer. Think of the pink gloves NFL players wear this month. Perhaps the fight against cancer can serve as a model for better cooperation between people in other areas as well. Thank you Zonta, Pink Hatters, United Memorial Medical Center Healthy Living, Genesee County Senior Center and GO ART!

The research shows that sunburn has a long-term effect on both our bodies as well as our health. Resultantly our skin is more prone to what most woman fears that is aging of a delicate skin. Sunburn Skin Cancer is yet another long-term effect that cause in our bodies. Sunburns of all types accelerate the risk of three major type of what we can call the Sunburn Skin Cancer. They are categorized as Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC), Squamous Cell Carcinoma(SCC) and Melanoma. Melanoma is one of the deadliest Sunburn Skin Cancers.

Ordinarily, common sunburn obliterates the cells belonging to the outer skin layer causing harm to the tiny blood vessels beneath. If the burns penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin, it will spoil the elastic fibers within the skin, and over times it will turn yellowish and cause wrinkled skin. Sunburn will also destroy the protective pigment of the body called melanin that protects the skin from the UV rays. Melanin content is differing to a great extent from individual to individual. Darker skinned people tend to have more melanin than white skinned individual. It is white men who are more prone to Sunburn Skin Cancers.

The harm to the skin cells by from UV exposure can dent their DNA. And recurring DNA damage will lead to cancerous cell. The incidence of Sunburn Skin Cancers is an ever rising issue in many parts of our Globe and considered as serious issue related to health.

Skin Cancer Basal Cell Carcinoma is a type of Sunburn Skin Cancers and comprises of more than 80% of the entire non melanoma skin cancers. The cancerous cells of basal cell carcinoma show most of its expansion in the region of head and necks which are mostly tend to get solar exposure. People within the age group 40 to 60 years are more liable to be influenced by such tumors of this Sunburn Skin Cancers.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer or SCC is one yet another common type of sunburn skin cancer which has said to affect not less than 200,000 Americans almost every year. Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer is another non-melanoma type skin cancer together with Basal Cell Carcinoma. . The symptoms of Squamous Cell Carcinoma Skin Cancer must be recognized prior to the advanced development and spreading in the body otherwise it will lead to nasty Metastasis.

There are many factors which can be attributed to causing mouth cancer. Any form of tobacco use can be a source for developing mouth cancer. This includes all kinds of tobacco, whether it is smokeless or not. Those who consume alcoholic beverages are more likely to develop mouth cancer than those who do not indulge. Over exposure to the sun is also linked with mouth cancer. A little more than one fourth of those who contract mouth cancer have never smoked.

Mouth cancer can be diagnosed by a dentist. They will check your mouth, throat and neck to see if there are any irregularities such as sores, lumps or discolorations of any kind. Any of these may be a sign that mouth cancer is beginning to develop. If the dentist finds anything that looks unhealthy they will do a biopsy to confirm or deny the presence of mouth cancer.

Just because you develop a sore in the mouth area does not mean it is cancerous. However, routinely examining the mouth and lips will ensure that any new development can be checked on by a health care professional. By checking the lips, mouth and gums thoroughly one time a month you can catch anything that appears suspicious early on. Early intervention is key to the chances of a positive recovery.

If in the exams you give your mouth area you find any sort of discoloration. Also be alert when any sores do develop. If they appear and are not cleared up within a week, see your dentist. Usually non-cancerous sores will peak in a couple of days and then begin to lessen. They should be almost completely gone in a week or less.

Sometimes mouth cancer sores can be very small and hard to detect. Along with frequent self examinations, you should be seen by a dentist at least once a year for people who are older than forty. Those who are between twenty and forty should have an oral exam at least once every three years. This will ensure the early detection of any irregularities that may arise.

Along with mouth cancer sores there are several other symptoms associated with mouth cancer that should signal time for a checkup. Red and white spots inside the mouth, mouth sores that bleed, or areas in or around the mouth that thicken up or swell for no reason may be signs that cancer is present. Difficulty moving any part of the mouth or throat including swallowing may be an indication of the presence of cancer. If any of these develop promptly see your dentist or oral hygienist.

Here are some very important things we as women must do to lower our risk of suffering from breast cancer:

Regularly do self-breast exams Be aware of any family history of breast cancer Consider your menstrual and reproductive history Schedule annual mammograms Exercise regularly Maintain a healthy body weight Limit alcohol consumption Swear off cigarettes Think “fresh” when it comes to food If you are age 20 – 39, you should perform breast self-exams and look for signs of change. Schedule a clinical breast exam every three years.

If you are age 41 – 49, you should have a mammogram every one to two years based on previous findings.

Your overall risk of developing any type of cancer before you turn forty is only 1 in 48, according to the ACS. I personally knew a young mother of several young children who was diagnosed with breast cancer and within three months she was dead. It was very tragic for her husband and children. But that is very rare.

If you are fifty and older, you should have yearly mammograms.

Half of all women diagnosed with breast cancer are over age 65.

Regarding your menstrual and reproductive history, early menstruation or late menopause, having your first child at an older age, or taking birth control pills for more than ten years if you are under 35 increase your risk of breast cancer.

If your mother or sister had breast cancer, you are at greater risk.

Also, if you have dense breast tissue and past radiation therapy to the breast or chest area or a history of hormone treatments, you are also at higher risk.

We need a cure for the health of future generations, and for the ones you and I love. Eradicating breast cancer has never been more important.

Because there is no real gauge to measure the harm that may cause mesothelioma if the patient or his family, the amount shown as mesothelioma settlements today, differs widely from case to case, and also from state to state, depending around the laws and amendments.

Nevertheless, the primary factor that determines the settlement price, in addition towards the harm that has brought on mesothelioma affected person, is the state, region and political atmosphere that has come towards the solution of mesothelioma. Throughout the 80 and 90, when a large number of claims had been presented and also the damage brought on by mesothelioma calibrated, the political climate in most U.S. was immensely favorable to sufferers.

However, the general political climate seems to have undergone a slight change. An example could be given of a proposed reform in Texas, which makes neutral medical tests obligatory for asbestos-related diseases and another in the state of Georgia, exactly where the responsibility lies with the applicant to offer all possible evidence to show the issue was really caused by asbestos.

These draft amendments were signed mid 90′s, after much controversy was about mesothelioma lawsuits being misused by both lawyers and patients of exaggerated claims. There are, however, is not a problem when it comes to genuine cases of mesothelioma.

The settlement amount also varies. In the south, it is believed that most mesothelioma settlements across a figure of one million. However, there can be no generalizations about the settlement money, as each solution depends on the merits of the case itself and not lend itself to generalizations.

Settlements can range from a couple of thousand bucks to millions of dollars. There’s an average variety of mesothelioma settlement. There have even been cases of mass settlements, exactly where people supposedly ended up being only a few dollars out. The final choice depends entirely around the legitimacy of the allegations of negligence on the part from the defendant and also the harm brought on towards the plaintiff. Because the courts have a tradition of referring to the previous settlements, the agreement could also depend to some extent on the outcomes of other settlements and also the specimen in the rest of the country.

It is possible to virtually destroy your ovaries by radiation treatments to cure your breast cancer. This is to prevent them from secreting estrogen and ultimately keep the hormone from being used by breast-cancer cells to stimulate further growth. The problem with this is that you are giving up on your chances at having (more?) kids.
Useful Write Up About Breast Cancer Treatments is from Healthcare Blogs

Radiation therapy is an attractive breast cancer treatment that a lot of women like for the condition. But if you have been treated by it before, it may not be so ideal. The doctor may then suggest other treatments, like chemo, for instance.

In treating your breast cancer, you may want to decrease the level of fat and alcohol in your diet. These things, you must know, increase the risk of you catching the disease. Instead, you want to eat more fruits and vegetables, known to decrease your risk of cancer.

You may want to try such breast cancer treatments as aromatase inhibitors and inactivators. They are hormone therapeutic drugs that suppress estrogen production by preventing the final step in estrogen synthesis. However, they are still in the test phase. Perhaps if you are patient enough, you may be one of their success stories.

Here’s one breast cancer treatment that will blow your mind. How about a prophylactic mastectomy? It may seem rather rash, but you cannot deny the fact that this removal of both your breasts before any signs of breast cancer are detected is rather effective. Why, it removes the vulnerable tissue before the cancer can take hold. Often it is used if you are believed to be highly susceptible.

In treating breast cancer in its early stages, you have mostly two options. The first is a mastectomy, which removes the infected tissue in various stages. The second is a minor mastectomy, called a lumpectomy, which removes only the lump or tumor, before you are irradiated by gamma rays to kill of any further potential growths.

If you live in the United States, better still if you have a friend who has ever suffered from cancer, you may have heard of Tamoxifen. It is a hormone therapy breast cancer treatment that exploits chemicals in your body to kill off cancer cells. If you are undergoing breast cancer treatment, the doctor will likely recommend it at some stage.
